Acces and use the Internet Assignment

What is the Internet and how does it work?
The Internet is a network of networks that connects computers all around the world.
They are linked by copper wires, fibre optic cables, wireless connections and other modern technologies. It contains a huge amount of information resources and services.
Hypertext
Is text displayed on a computer that may contain tables, images and other presentational devices as well. It also includes references called hyperlinks that you can acces by clicking them.
Email
Email is electronic mail that you can send via the internet. Most of the email system is based on servers that store and deliver your mails so that you can check your messages from any device that is connected to the internet.
VOIP
Stands for voice over internet protocol and is telephony over IP networks.
It contains all voice messages that are transported via the internet and not the public telephone network.
WIFI
Wifi is mostly used as a synonym for wireless LAN. Which is a wireless internet connection. It is also a trademark of the Wi-Fi alliance.
Bluetooth
With Bluetooth you can create personal area networks. It is an open wireless protocol to exchange data over short distances.
BitTorrent
BitTorrent is a peer to peer file sharing protocol. It is used for sharing large amounts of data.
URL
Stands for uniform resource locator and is basically the unique address of an internetpage.

Instant Messaging
Today there are a lot of programs and applications that allow users to send and receive messages in realtime over a network like the internet. All the messages are based on hypertext.
Streaming Media
Streaming media means that you dont download the whole mediafile to keep it on your computer. The data only gets stored in your cache and is deleted after you showed or played the media.

Domain Name
Is the unique name and adress of an internet page. It is an identification label that shows the authority and administrative automomy in the internet.
Website Host
A website host sells his webspace on his servers to individual users to create their own internet website.
The World Wide Web Consortium
Creates and develops standards for the world wide web. It is the main international standard organisation for the WWW.
IP Address
Is a unique address that every computer gets as soon as he logs onto the network. (Stands for internet protocol address)

Web Browsers
A web browser is the platform you use to surf the internet. You can reach any single internetpage in a webbrowser by typing in the URL in your address space. It is a software application that allows you to share information on the internet.
Internet Explorer
Has been the most widely used webbrowser for a long time. It is made for windows but now can be also used on a mac.
It supports HTML, CSS, XML, DOM, XSLT but does not support XHTML and SVG.
The standard features are tabbed browsing, use of different toolbars, search functions and so on.
Firefox
Made by mozilla. It is the second most widely used internet browser. It contains a lot of features and plugins that make the use of the internet more comfortable. Like the option to show all content of the page in a plain way (for example on myspace to read hidden content) or the option to download any media from any page as well as flash plugin block and so on. It can also reopen your last internet session in case you computer crashes.

Safari
Safari is the standard browser on mac. It contains features such as spell checking, pop up blocking, tabbed browsing, different toolbars, text search and so on. You can also save parts of web pages as web clips for viewing on the apple dashboard.
Opera
Is a browser that runs on windows, mac and also linux systems. It is pretty strong on the mobilephone market. It contains features such as automatic password fill in, pop up blocking, downloadmanagers, an email client and so on. You can download lots of plugins but opera limits what they can do so that no third party can introduce any bugs.
I personally use Safari on my mac but found firefox as the most comfortable browser to use. I tried opera as well but it always seemed to have problems especially with playing media on my mac so i never use it anymore.

Search Engine
A search engine is a webpage or plugin that searches the internet for content. You can type in words and phrases and it delivers you all webpages in its library that contain the searched information. Different engines have different libraries though as well as different results.
The most popular engine these days is google.
FTP
Stands for file transfer protocol. It is used to exchange and manipulate files over a network.
Internet Protocols
PPP
Stands for point to point protocol . It is used to establish a direct connection between two networking devices.

POP3
Stands for post office protocol and is used to retrieve meail from a remote server. It identifies specific messages by their ordinal number on the mail server.
TCP IP
Stands for internat protocol suite and is a set of communications protocols used in networks. It is named after the two most important protocols in it – the transmission control protocol and the internet protocol.
HTTP
Stands for hypertext transfer protocol and is used to retrieve interlinked resources on the world wide web.
MIME
Stands for multipurpose internet mail extensions and is a standard that extends the format of email to support text in character sets other than the ASCII system, non-text attachments, message bodies with multiple parts and header informartion in non ASCII character sets.
SMTP
Stands for simple mail transfer protocol and is a protocol for email transmission across IP networks.
Scripting Languages

HTML
Stands for hypertext markup language and is the main language used for internet pages and content.

DHTML
Stands for dynamic HTML and is used to create interactive and animated websites.

XML
Stands for extensible markup language and is a set of rules to encode documents electronically. It is mostly used for the representation of arbitrary data structures e.g. in web services.

Javascript
Is a scripting language used for the development of dynamic websites.

Acces
ADSL
Stands for asymetric digital subscriber line and is a form of dsl.
It makes the data transmission over copper copper telephone lines faster than a conventional modem.
ISDN
Stands for integrated services digital network and is a telephone system network. Ist slower than dsl. Its main feature is the use of speech and data on the same line.
Dial Up
Provides internet access via telephone lines. The computer uses a modem connected to a telephone line to dial into an internet service providers node to get a modem to modem link.
Cable
Is primarily used to deliver broadband internet access by using the high bandwith of cable television networks.
Satellite Internet
Is used where other internet connections arent available. It is available almost worldwide and uses satellites to connect the devices of a network.
ISP
Stands for internet service provider and is a company that provides acces to the internet via dial up, dsl, cable mode oder wireless connections.
